Eben Dodd, LMT joins Deep Roots

Though he’s spent the last 20 years in the San Francisco Bay area, Eben Dodd is no stranger to New England. Born in Boston, his grandparents had lived in Putney, Vermont since before he was born, and Eben and his family moved to join them when he was still in high school.

Before moving “back East” in August with his children - Lea, 10, and Ian, 13 - he did some research on jobs in massage work in the area and landed on Deep Roots.

“I like that it’s different from a spa situation,” Eben said. “It’s more therapeutically oriented, and I thought it was somewhere that I could use my deep tissue training.”

Eben studied with Art Riggs, a recognized expert in deep tissue, who actually helped Eben sustain his career by teaching him how to preserve his body while effectively caring for others..

“I’ve been 25 years doing massage therapy, and my thumbs were giving out at the time I started training with him,” Eben said. “It really brought me over a hump where I was having some difficulties … It’s also given me a lot more focus, anatomically, with what I’m doing in massage sessions.

Eben first trained at The Swedish Institute in New York City, but only after getting his bachelor’s degree in fine art. He trained in Swedish and shiatsu massage, and first worked with a physician doing manual lymph drainage - a gentle modality meant to mobilize lymph in the body.

He started doing mostly Swedish in spas, but more recently has focused on deep tissue massage, and now specializes in that.
